It's been two long years.

Is anyone on this community still alive? Anyone feel like posting?

Since this community has been more or less abandoned, I thought I'd share this with you all. It's basically the same thing as this community but not on LJ.

Clean Zeds / Dirty Zeds [Sep. 3rd, 2007|02:50 pm]

longhairedhippy
I mentioned Clean Zeds in my first post from Fort George, and now I have a little off-duty time, I thought I'd clarify what I was talking about. Those of you around the world who are still active on this community might have seen the same thing.

Essentially, there seem to be two sorts of zombies. The Clean Zeds and the Dirty Zeds. The Dirty Zeds are the regular, Hollywood-movie shambling corpses, dead as a doornail. Dangerous in large numbers, but easily out-run and fairly easily dispatched. Over time they become less and less dangerous as they eventually rot away and bits drop off, rendering them far less mobile. Unpleasant to say the least, but not too difficult to deal with.

By far the worse though, are the Clean Zeds. These exist in a sort of half-life, nowhere near human, but not decaying, still possessed of a rudimentary intelligence and able to act in groups. And they're fast. Terrifyingly fast.

The populations of these two groups rise and fall over time, in waves. The army medical people here have a captured Clean, and have been examining her. Amazingly, she's still alive (barely) and we think this is what makes the difference, and why they're not rotting away. Clean Zeds are far more likely to kill, making Dirty Zeds, while Dirty Zeds will wound and infect, so the victim succumbs to the virus and becomes one of the undecayed Clean Zeds we're coming to hate so much.

At least while we're here we're under army protection and have access to guns, which they're training us up with. Sweet, life-giving firearms. If we'd encountered many more of these earlier on at Kielder, we'd have been screwed. I'm just glad there's a huge fortified wall between them and us.

The Penrith types Struck again a few hours ago but we  managed to drive them off but only just. They took a few of us and if they're not dead then it's even worse. I don't think I could shoot someone who I have been around for weeks.

Alive [Aug. 30th, 2007|02:47 pm]

I cannot believe it's been two months since I last posted on here.

To say we'd been busy is a bit of an understatement. I hardly know where to begin. A few days after my last post the electrical grid lost power and a couple of us went out to investigate in a couple of the cars we'd taken at Penrith. We found the problem quickly enough, some of the supplying electricity pylons a couple of miles away had loose cables slapping around in the breeze. Through our binoculars we could see zombies burnt onto the metal of the pylon, where they'd been chewing through the electrical cables - if you remember my earlier post about electricity, you'll understand why they were doing this.

When we got back to Kielder water, we could see we had serious problems. Since the power had gone out, the shamblers had stopped crowding around the electrical substation and had noticed the boat. They'd been howling for a couple of hours and a lot of the faster zombies (the Penrith types, or as we're now calling them, "Clean Zeds") had started gathering around the water's edge. We had to evacuate the boat and get out of the area as quickly as we could. We had three cars and split into rescuing and distraction teams, with the distracting car driving right up to the zeds, honking the horn and drawing away while our boat passengers loaded up into the other waiting vehicles. It took three hours to get our people safe, but we all got out. Then we started driving.

That was a nightmare journey in itself, but I'll get to that later. I don't think I have the strength to start talking to you about that at the moment.

We're now enlisted men, and are serving with the Royal Irish Regiment at Fort George in the Highlands, alongside a couple of hundred other survivors from all over.

Other quick updates... Not heard from [info]delanthear or [info]tiggothy, I'm really hoping they're still alive but by now I've got to wonder if they're not shambling around some deserted town by now. I'm sorry I couldn't save you... Oh balls... can't afford to get all choked up, not now... I've got guard duty in ten minutes and I've got to get ready. Take care, all of you.

Still Alive ... [Jun. 30th, 2007|12:20 pm]

esc_azkaban
I made it to South Bend to get Kj, my girlfriend.

When I got to her house, it was barely a house anymore. The second floor and attic looked like matchsticks scattered over the yard, all the windows had been smashed out, and I couldn't find a moving, alive body on the entire block. I still went in, ran in, up the stairs, yelling for her with a fire axe in my hand from the ambulence and all I found was blood down the staircase.

I stayed in the town for ... I don't even know how many days now, searching and I think I'm the only survivor. It's not a big town, there's not a lot of places to look. I went to her shop, nothing but broken glass and dried blood there too.

I don't know where the days have gone, but I've covered everything and I can't find her. It's all a grey, putrid blur and I'm ... out of reasons.

I am completely out of reasons to run anywhere.

Dear God, thank you for child safety locks on vehicles and Your Own Luck. Love, Megan.

We got caught while in town. Hemmed in. Scariest effing moment of my entire life. Actually despaired there for a while. Was ready to let them in. If Dad hadn't been there, I might have.

Right. First things first. Inventory. )

What happened in town. )

We haven’t driven anywhere, except farther along the lake shore. We’re just south of Glen Elder, off road 716-1 on the lake edge – one of the little promontories. If you’re near the area, we’ve charged our cell phones. Comment on this and I’ll give you my cell number. Maybe we can meet up.

survivor. [Jun. 28th, 2007|11:13 am]

[Current Location |My bedroom, Provo, UT, USA]

We got another survivor. Her name is Sam and she’s been living on the roof of her apartment building about seven blocks away with the fire escape pulled up and hadn’t eaten in nearly a week and a half. She saw the smoke form our fireplace and made a run for it with nothing but a baseball bat. I’m glad she’s here, now we have something else to think about for a while. On an extremely inappropriate timing note: I think she’s really cute. I’m way too much of a spaz to do anything about it and even if I wasn’t the world is too shitty now to even think about a possible romantic situation. It’s not like I can take her out to dinner and a movie now is it? But for now I’ll just think she’s really cute.

We pulled up some of the supports from the basement stairs to secure the basement windows and if we have a problem spot it’s the outside basement door. If they get, in it’ll be from there. Zeth, Bryan and I have been talking about a way to jerry rig it so that if, god forbid, that does happen we can get out fast and keep them down there and, more importantly, away from us.

Possibly more recon soon, not looking forward to it.

As always, wish us luck surviving till tomorrow.
